Charitable food aid in Finland: from a social issue to an environmental solution

2019

Since the establishment of the first food bank in 1995, charitable food aid (CFA) has become entrenched in Finland as a seemingly irreplaceable solution to food poverty. Further, it has recently been suggested that the focus of food aid activities is shifting from food poverty and temporary hunger alleviation towards environmental sustainability through addressing food waste via organized re-distribution of expiring food from retail to charitable organizations. This potentially creates a mechanism that (1) solidifies food poverty and (2) fortifies the paradoxical situation where charitable organizations delivering food aid are dependent on food waste rather than trying to reduce it. To unde…

A longitudinal examination of the transition to symbolic communication in the second year of life

2003

Between 10 and 24 months of age, children progress from communicating through conventional signals to communicating through symbols in a variety of situations. The present study investigates this transition analysing mother–child communication frames and the child’s communicative acts, and tracing the developmental changes in both frames and communicative acts. Four children (2 girls, 2 boys) and their mothers were observed longitudinally and extensively, from 10 to 24 months of age, using a multiple case-study method. Through the detailed investigation of these single cases, clear developmental trajectories were found, showing that conventional frames and representational gestures ‘bridge’…

Managed Multiculturalism in Finnish Media Initiatives

2007

This paper focuses on Finnish mainstream journalism featuring multiculturalism. Three different initiatives are analysed with a qualitative text method founded on discourse and frame analysis. Finnish mainstream journalism took a multicultural turn in the mid-990s, two decades later than in neighbouring Sweden where similar initiatives were launched in the 1970s. The paper takes a critical look at the power relations these initiatives assert or transgress, how multicultural discourses position various actors in society, and how the mainstream media encounter cultural and ethnic differences in a changing demographic situation with a positive intention.

Balancing the Frame of Threat: Uninvited Migrants in the Finnish News

2010

This chapter analyzes Finnish news journalism concerning asylum seekers and undocumented migration. It focuses on 'the variety of others', the media not only construct a division between 'us' and 'them,' but also create varieties of 'others.' The solution to the problems related to otherness is not, however, to recognize that we are all different, as the currently popular discourse that celebrates 'cultural diversity' often claims. This chapter scrutinizes the frames of 'threat' and 'victim' which are typical of the media’s coverage of asylum seekers and undocumented migrants. To identify the narrative, I have analyzed what is defined as problems and what is offered as the causes of and sol…

From risk assessment to in-context trajectory evaluation - GMOs and their social implications

2011

Purpose: Over the past twenty years, GMOs have raised enormous expectations, passionate political controversies, and an on-going debate on how should these technologies be assessed. Current risk-assessment procedures generally assess GMOs in terms of their potential risk of negatively affecting human health and the environment. Yet, is this risk-benefit approach appropriate to a deliver a robust assessment of GMOs? In this paper, we question the validity of current risk-assessment from both a social and an ecological perspective, and we elaborate an alternative approach, namely in-context trajectory evaluation Methods: This paper combines frame analysis, context analysis and eco-social anal…

Conditions of cultural citizenship: intersections of gender, race and age in public debates on family migration

2015

This article analyses problem framings in public debates on family migration in Finland. The study focuses on the less-examined category of age and how it intersects with gender, race and religion. We examine the discursive context within which parliamentarians and the media negotiate questions of migration policies, belonging and citizenship. Our analysis identifies problem framings by combining frame analysis with the ‘What is the problem represented to be?’ approach, which understands policies as problematizations. We found that the debates held up the rather common notion of vulnerable women and children as groups that tighter family migration policies protect. The debates excluded cert…

Technology-related communication episodes (N = 88) were identified from team interaction and then analyzed by means of frame analysis. Four frame categories were found: the practical frame, work frame, user frame, and relational frame. Team members talked about technological properties and functions as well as giving and receiving technological guida…
